“The Halloween audience at the Roky Erickson and the Black Angels show on October 30, was mixed and reflected the dual nature of Roky’s music catalogue – the psychedelic crowd and the heavy metal crowd. As Roky launched into the perfect soundtrack for the night, the audience’s exalted mood exploded like fireworks. “If it’s raining and you’re running don’t slip in mud ’cause if you do, you’ll slip in blood tonight, is the night of the vampire.” Then, but one thought could spread throughout the theater: this must be the perfect place to be on Halloween.”

Dungen blew my MYND

Friday, November 14th, 2008

Yes, Dungen was that good that my mynd needed to be spelled in the most ancient and epic of variations. Mynd.

My one fear was that their concert would be akin to last time I saw them, where Gustav Ejstes led us all into some sort of Mayan corn maize of jam-sesh, and I couldn’t find my way back out. Though Gustav definitely fluted it up last night, he responsibly limited his viruosity to a sensible ten minute freakout. (Shortly after, guitarist Reine Fiske noted, “We are not a jam band.”) And, thank god they werent this time. Dungen pulled out all the stops to play songs from their recent album, “4,” such as “Familj” and “Det Tar Tid,” as well as classics such as “Festival” from their last album.

In all honesty, I was skeptical about their ability to reproduce such multi-textured songs live, however I feel so not worthy for ever doubting them. Dungen’s three part Zombie, Beach Boy harmonies floated into the audience like a perfectly polished rainbow bubble. But like, cast by a Black Wizard, ’cause they totally got heavy at times with some fedback, Sabbath style riffs thrown in.
