Ya Ho Wha 13 Tonight, Dec. 19th at Spaceland

Friday, December 19th, 2008

Ya Ho Wha 13 Aka Father Yod and the Spirit of ‘76 aka Yahowa 13 is playing tonight at Spaceland. Fronted by sexy bearded wizard/The Source family spiritual gyude Fatger Yod, the band is a way psycgedelic band full of striving higher consciousness rhythms, tribal sweat inducing drums and distorted vibrations. Most of their music was recorded impromptu, without rehearsal, as a spontaneous expression to the gods of morning. (All the tracks were produced after heavy meditaysh seshes, usually between the hours of about 3am-7am in the morning.) PS the remaining members are called Sunflower, Octavius and Djin.

Also, they have an intense and highly coded symbolic structure of meaning behind each and every detail of their band. For a brief example, take the number 13 in their name. No bogus Halloween horror cats- think less about wearing black eyeliner and more about the masosn embedding 13 into the dollar bill 13 times. Within the context of the band,  13 was used to indicate that Father Yod was the 1 and the other 3 band members were the 3, also used as an indicator transformation and transition. 13 is also the octave of the chromatic scale of tones leading to the next octave representing that Father Yod himself was the Alpha and Omega, the beginning of the end, and infinite progression/retrogression through him as the medium.

BY DANIEL HARJU

Sorting through old CDs, I found this old favorite by stoner-rockers Monster Magnet. This band, led by druggie testosterone-high leather gyrator Dave Wyndorf, has lived through many identity crises. But some early records are both raw and psychedelic rawedelic – which should sound like cotton candy in the ears of stoner-rock revivalists.

The Binges

The Binges

Last Sunday, The Binges headlined the King King along with Jessie Deluxe, Din Caliber and San Diego’s Dirty Sweet. Unfortunately, Halcyon missed Jessie’s opening act. Fortunately, however, I have no photographic evidence of the beaded-dreadlocked mystery man “mcing” the event, apparently named “Dizzy Reed.” I promptly googled his name before writing this article, and this is what I came up with:

Dizzy has been a member of Guns N’ Roses since 1990, playing on Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II. Aside from Axl he is the only remaining from the past.

Dizzy says: “No matter what we do, there’s gonna be some people that are just not gonna let go of the old band. But the majority of the people I see out there are having a great time; they’re losing their minds and dancing and singing along. It doesn’t seem to me like they miss the old guys.”

“One by one, people started quitting. The old band was a little more hell-bent on self-destruction; this band, I think, is kinda headed upwards as opposed to downward.”

Reed is a fan of Larry Norman, a pioneer of Christian Music, in which he has played on Norman’s Copper Wires album.

Yeah, seriously, I’m pretty sure no one misses fucking SLASH. So stoked the band is now just Axl’s braided face and this dude. Are you kidding me?!

I also didn’t really get the joke he started the night out with after Din Caliber played. Here’s a transcription, of what he said maybe someone can help me: ”Nice keyboard work Damon Fox. Speaking of keyboards, I play the keyboards. You may have heard of my band, Guns N’ Roses. No one thought we could do it, but after 17 years we put out an album.” Is it supposed to be funny because this dude’s actually acknowledging he has anything to do with the multi-million dollar plop art that is Guns N’ Roses latest sonic assault? I don’t get it.
